Realtime voice assistant development: define the conversation contract

A convincing voice demo can still fail as a product when the user interrupts, changes headphones or loses connectivity. A development brief should define those moments as carefully as the assistant’s normal reply.

Define what the assistant may do

Start with the conversation’s purpose. A coaching assistant, a translator and a support assistant should not share an unrestricted instruction set. Describe supported requests, required clarification and prohibited side effects. Decide whether the response is only spoken or also appears as text, and whether that text must match the audio. This gives reviewers something concrete to judge beyond whether a voice sounds pleasant.

Treat audio as a product subsystem

The microphone, speaker, operating system and remote service form one pipeline. A session needs an identifiable owner for capture and playback, an understandable listening state and a reliable stop action. List supported speaker, receiver, wired and Bluetooth routes. Device routing changes belong in the first release scope when people will use the assistant while walking or driving.

Write down the turn lifecycle

Represent listening, submitting, generating, playing and interrupted states explicitly. The interface must not show “listening” while capture has stopped. A cancelled response should stop its pending audio and leave the next turn usable. Text submitted during a live session needs a defined place in that lifecycle; otherwise two pathways can create overlapping replies or inconsistent conversation history.

Measure the delay people actually feel

Separate the time waiting for an utterance to finish from transport, generation and speaker startup. A single total cannot explain whether the assistant is too cautious about silence or whether playback is buffering. Set acceptance targets after measuring representative devices and networks. Report slow cases as well as typical ones, because an occasional long silence can make a voice interface feel broken.

Agree the evidence before implementation

Ask for recordings made with synthetic speech, event timelines and a route test matrix. Include interruptions, short questions, long pauses, denied microphone access and repeated starts. Test without headphones as well as with them. Automated checks can validate state transitions, but a real device review is still needed for speaker feedback and Bluetooth behavior.

A useful first voice acceptance script

  • Ask a short question on speakerphone, interrupt the answer, then submit a typed correction without restarting the session.
  • Repeat the exchange after disconnecting headphones and check that both the listening indicator and the actual input route agree.
  • End the session while audio is queued, then verify that the next start contains no stale speech or conversation fragments, and that the microphone indicator returns to the correct state.

Decide what the first release excludes

Do not imply that a consumer assistant is suitable for emergency decisions, unattended transactions or every language merely because a model can generate speech. Arte Soft’s GPT Realtime Assistant is a published reference for discussing these engineering boundaries. A suitable delivery handover includes session diagnostics, documented provider configuration and the exact device conditions used during acceptance, not only a video of a successful conversation.
