Secure API authentication: connect identity to permission
Authentication establishes an identity; authorization decides what that identity may do. An API can validate a token correctly and still expose another user’s records. A practical review covers both layers, along with session renewal, revocation and service credentials. The starting point is a map of protected operations, not a decision that adopting JWT has already solved security.
Map the trust boundaries
List browser clients, mobile apps, backend services and administrative tools that call the API. Identify who issues credentials and which service is allowed to accept them. Public clients cannot safely keep a shared application secret in their shipped code. A backend-to-backend integration has different credential and rotation needs. Record which operations are anonymous, authenticated or privileged and what data ownership means for each. This map should include exports and maintenance endpoints, which are easy to overlook when attention is focused on the main login flow. Every boundary needs an explicit reason to trust the presented identity.
Validate tokens within a defined contract
For signed tokens, follow the issuer’s contract and relevant security guidance for algorithms, issuer, audience, expiry and keys. Do not accept arbitrary algorithm choices or treat decoding as verification. Plan how key rotation and unavailable metadata affect requests. Keep credentials out of URLs and logs where they can spread through ordinary tooling. Define session expiry and renewal behavior so a user can recover without repeated or unsafe work. The appropriate approach may use an existing identity provider rather than a custom password system; the decision should follow the product’s account and operational requirements.
Test permission failures explicitly
Use fixtures for different users and organizations, then attempt access with a valid token belonging to the wrong principal. Test missing scopes, revoked access, expired sessions and changed roles. Verify authorization again on the server even when the interface hides an action. Deliver the trust map, access matrix and reproducible checks alongside recommended code changes. Acceptance should show that permitted operations work and forbidden operations fail without leaking sensitive details. This review is bounded engineering work, not a statement that the entire product has passed a comprehensive penetration test or attained a regulatory certification.
Check ordinary user recovery as well as rejection. When a session expires during a form edit, the interface should explain the next safe step and preserve appropriate unsent work without accidentally exposing protected data after the user has signed out.
Include the maintenance path
Support tools, emergency access and scheduled jobs need controlled credentials and a way to revoke them. Document rotation ownership and the consequences of deleting an account or changing organization membership. Arte Soft’s published apps provide product context, but your identity requirements need their own assessment. Bring the API routes, current provider configuration and a description of user roles. We can scope a review around a representative protected workflow and expand where evidence indicates risk. A clear access model is easier to maintain than scattered checks whose intended behavior exists only in a developer’s memory.
