Separate three language inventories

Interface localization, speech recognition and translation coverage are different lists. Speech synthesis can introduce another. Create a matrix for each promised language pair and device mode rather than advertising the largest number from any one component. Test both directions, including a speaker who switches languages unexpectedly. A product that supports typed translation for a language may still lack usable local speech recognition.

Choose the conversation model

Decide between alternating turns, a single shared microphone or separate participants and devices. Show who is expected to speak and which language the next response will use. Translation instructions must preserve the distinction between translating a question and answering it. A repair action should let the user correct recognized text or repeat a turn without retaining unrelated fragments from the previous attempt.

Define each input type independently

Typed text, microphone audio, a camera image and an imported document are separate capabilities. Images require extraction and layout decisions; documents may contain selectable text, scanned pages or protected content. Scope what is supported and what the app should reject. Do not market every attachment as translatable merely because the picker accepts it or a general model can receive an image.

Compare processing modes by availability

Cloud and on-device pathways may differ in languages, model downloads, connectivity, quality and device requirements. Check availability at runtime and explain the reason when a pair cannot run locally. Avoid silently falling back to a paid cloud request if the user explicitly chose local processing. Agree how subscriptions and credits apply to each mode before the billing interface is built.

Validate meaning with representative reviewers

Use a bilingual review set for the priority pairs and include negation, numbers, politeness and ambiguous phrases. Evaluate whether the result preserves the intended meaning rather than whether it matches a single reference sentence exactly. For medical, legal or other high-consequence contexts, the product must communicate its limits and should not imply that unreviewed machine output is a substitute for an appropriate professional.

Translation scope checkpoints

• Name the priority spoken language pairs and verify both directions using the same target build and device conditions.
• List camera, document and text inputs separately, including a sample that must be rejected rather than producing a misleading translation.
• Ask a reviewer to correct one mistaken recognition and continue the conversation, establishing that repair works without silently switching the selected processing mode.

Define a release package with honest coverage

Deliver the language matrix, mode behavior, sample conversations, unsupported-input handling and actual-device results.
