WebRTC connectivity test matrix: turn “calls work” into evidence
A connectivity matrix should expose the conditions your product relies on. It is not a list of device names with a single green tick; it connects each environment to setup, usable media and recovery checks.
Choose dimensions from the audience
List supported browsers or native platforms, important device generations and representative network combinations. Include one peer on Wi-Fi and another on mobile data, not only two devices on the same router. Add restrictive environments when customers use them. Prioritize the combinations that matter to the release rather than multiplying every possible dimension into a matrix nobody can execute or maintain.
Define the stages that must pass
A connected signaling socket does not establish a working call. Check invitation delivery, answer handling, selected candidate path, bidirectional audio and video where applicable. Define what happens when permission is denied or only one participant enables a camera. Record setup time separately from steady-state media quality. This makes a failed case actionable instead of collapsing many different symptoms into “connection failed.”
Include deliberate fallback cases
Run normal selection and a forced-relay scenario so fallback is verified independently. Test expired relay credentials, unreachable infrastructure and incomplete candidate exchange in a controlled environment. The application should explain failure and allow a clean retry. A build that succeeds only through the easiest direct path has not established that customers behind difficult networks can use the product.
Test state changes during media flow
Move between Wi-Fi and mobile data, briefly interrupt connectivity and reconnect after one participant backgrounds the application. Check whether the original session resumes, requires renegotiation or ends with a clear message. Also confirm that stopped sessions release resources. Repeated join-leave cycles can expose leaks and stale events that a single long successful call never reveals.
Capture comparable evidence
For each run, retain build identifiers, endpoint conditions, relevant statistics and a short outcome note. Use synthetic media when it is sufficient. Distinguish unsupported, untested and failed states; an empty cell must not quietly become a pass in a release summary. When a fix is applied, rerun the affected cases and a small control group to catch changes that shifted the problem elsewhere.
A matrix row that means something
- Identify both endpoint builds and networks, the expected candidate path and the stage at which usable media must be confirmed.
- Attach the observed failure state and a trace when the result is unsuccessful, rather than marking a generic red square.
- Keep untested combinations visibly separate from unsupported ones and failed ones, so release approval is based on evidence rather than incomplete spreadsheet formatting.
Keep the matrix useful after delivery
Assign ownership and identify which checks run on every release versus infrastructure changes or major OS updates. Arte Soft’s published GPT Realtime Assistant provides relevant realtime product experience, while a client communication product needs its own acceptance environment. A test-planning engagement should produce a maintainable matrix, sample traces and a release decision process. Its value is reproducible confidence in specific conditions, not a promise that every future network will behave identically.

Wonek — communication engineering R&D, not a shipped or audited messaging product is our own product or engineering project. It provides context for the work we discuss here; it is not a claim of identical results for every client deployment.
