Implementing account deletion across the app, backend and subscriptions

A delete button is incomplete if it only clears the current screen or signs the person out. Account deletion needs a defined boundary across server records, shared content, device caches and third-party identity. It also needs an honest explanation of what happens to an App Store subscription.

The decision to make

Begin with the account and data inventory. Include automatically created guest profiles as well as conventional sign-in accounts. Identify records owned by the person, records shared with others and information that must be retained for a documented reason. Engineering should implement the approved retention policy rather than inventing legal exceptions during a code change.

Apple’s guidance covers accounts created automatically and explains that account removal does not itself stop billing through Apple. The interface should make that distinction visible before confirmation and provide the appropriate subscription-management route. Keep the flow straightforward; a confirmation can protect against accidents without turning deletion into an unrelated support obstacle.

A useful scope of work

A useful scope includes the in-app entry point, confirmation, authenticated backend request, deletion job and completion state. Decide how a request behaves when only some systems are available. A retried deletion should be safe, and a lost response should not create a new profile before the person understands the outcome. Revoke linked identity tokens when that integration requires it.

Test the whole journey with representative linked records and a deliberately interrupted request. Inspect server state and device storage after completion, not just the success alert. Describe any delayed work and retained information accurately. Update reviewer instructions and privacy copy to match the implemented control, including its actual menu location and the separate billing policy.

Acceptance checks to agree before delivery

Deletion acceptance should inspect what is gone and what remains across the defined systems. Use a representative account with linked data and an interrupted request, then verify the outcome independently. These checks connect the visible control to actual removal and keep subscription handling understandable before a person confirms the action.

  • Find and initiate deletion from the running app without relying on an undocumented support request.
  • Delete the intended server profile and associated in-scope records, then inspect the result independently.
  • Retry an interrupted request without recreating data or producing conflicting completion messages for the person.
  • Explain subscription management and retained information before confirmation using the approved localized wording.

Constraints and what to send us

Send a data map, account types, authentication methods, storage services and the owner-approved retention rules. Legal retention decisions and jurisdiction-specific obligations need the appropriate business or legal review. A local cache reset is not equivalent to account deletion. Acceptance should include backend evidence and a clear statement of any systems outside the implementation scope.

Our own product reference and a starting engagement

Account lifecycle implementation and deletion verification. Cloud Calendars is a published owned application with account-backed collaboration features, providing relevant product context. The portfolio link does not certify a particular deletion policy. Your engagement should connect the visible control to the actual data stores and document the separate treatment of subscriptions.
