An iOS architecture audit that ends with actionable decisions
An architecture audit should help you decide what to change next. A long list of style preferences rarely justifies its cost. Useful findings connect a specific dependency or ownership problem to crashes, lost work, slow delivery or an integration that cannot be tested safely.
The decision to make
Agree the purpose before granting repository access. You might be preparing for a handover, investigating repeated regressions or deciding whether a rewrite is warranted. These require different sampling. Ask the reviewer to trace a representative action through interface, state, persistence and network boundaries instead of scoring files by their resemblance to a favorite pattern.
Look for evidence of coupling: changing a purchase rule modifies unrelated screens, one global object owns several device services, or a test cannot run without production credentials. These observations should include reproduction steps and affected features. A diagram is valuable when it explains a risky dependency; it is not an outcome by itself.
A useful scope of work
The audit scope should include a reproducible build, dependency inventory, selected journey traces and a ranked risk register. For each finding, record user impact, confidence, proposed remediation and verification. Distinguish confirmed faults from maintainability concerns and questions that need further investigation. Do not turn every large file into an emergency.
A useful final session compares options: patch a boundary, isolate a service, add characterization tests or replace a bounded subsystem. Include the cost of migration and compatibility with existing stored data. The first remediation should be small enough to prove the audit’s recommendation while preserving a clear rollback path if an assumption is wrong.
Acceptance checks to agree before delivery
An architecture report becomes useful when findings lead to bounded decisions. Ask the reviewer to demonstrate the risk and explain how a proposed change will be verified without destabilizing unrelated features. These acceptance checks keep the engagement focused on evidence, prioritization and usable ownership notes rather than a preferred folder structure.
- Every high-priority finding names the affected workflow and evidence that another developer can inspect.
- The report separates confirmed bugs, architectural risks and optional style improvements with explicit reasoning.
- At least one recommended change has a bounded implementation plan and a meaningful regression check.
- The client receives dependency and ownership notes sufficient to discuss the findings with another supplier.
Constraints and what to send us
Send the repository, build instructions, known incidents and the business decision the audit should support. Read-only access is often enough for the assessment. An audit cannot prove the absence of all security or concurrency defects, especially when production behavior is not reproducible. Its limits, sampled areas and uninspected dependencies should be stated plainly.
Our own product reference and a starting engagement
Native application architecture review. GPT Realtime Assistant is a published product combining voice sessions with project and task workflows. It is relevant portfolio context for discussing boundaries between interactive features, but an audit of your application must be based on your code and incidents rather than a generic reference architecture.
Relevant Arte Soft work
GPT Realtime Assistant is our own product or engineering project. It provides context for the work we discuss here; it is not a claim of identical results for every client deployment.
