Swift concurrency migration: reduce risk module by module
A Swift concurrency migration should make ownership of mutable state clearer. Turning compiler warnings off or adding unchecked annotations everywhere can hide the work without reducing risk. Use a staged migration so the product remains testable while the team establishes where asynchronous operations and shared data belong.
The decision to make
Inventory the current language mode, dependencies and sources of concurrent work. Network callbacks, delegates, audio processing and database access may use different execution assumptions. Compiler diagnostics are useful evidence, but they do not replace understanding the lifecycle of a task. A canceled screen should not retain an operation that later changes unrelated state.
Choose a bounded module or feature first. Apple and Swift document incremental adoption paths, including stronger checks before a complete language-mode migration. The exact sequence depends on the codebase and toolchain. Keep a record of temporary compatibility annotations and why they are safe enough to use until the surrounding dependency is updated.
A useful scope of work
The engagement should map isolation boundaries, resolve representative diagnostics and specify cancellation and error behavior. UI updates, service actors and data transfer types need explicit ownership. Avoid placing all work on the main actor merely to silence warnings; that can trade a data-race concern for responsiveness problems that require separate measurement.
Validate the migrated path under overlapping requests, navigation changes and shutdown. Tests should exercise meaningful state transitions, not merely prove that a function is marked async. Record which dependencies still operate under older assumptions. The handover should include examples of the chosen concurrency conventions so later features do not reintroduce incompatible patterns.
Acceptance checks to agree before delivery
For concurrency work, compile-time progress and runtime behavior should be reviewed together. Keep the migration boundary visible and retest the overlapping actions that motivated it. These checks make it harder to mistake warning suppression for a corrected lifecycle or a safer sharing model for all mutable state in the application.
- Compile the agreed modules with the target concurrency checks and document any remaining scoped exceptions.
- Cancel or replace an in-flight task and confirm that stale output cannot overwrite newer user intent.
- Exercise concurrent reads and writes around the changed state boundary using representative production-sized data.
- Measure the critical interface path to confirm that the migration did not move expensive work onto it.
Constraints and what to send us
Send the Xcode version, deployment range, dependency lockfiles and known timing-related failures. A compiler-clean build is not a blanket proof of runtime correctness, especially across unsafe or external code. Do not combine the migration with unrelated interface changes unless required. Smaller changes make regressions easier to attribute and reduce the cost of reviewing the new isolation model.
Our own product reference and a starting engagement
Swift concurrency assessment and staged migration. GPT Realtime Assistant is an owned interactive voice product, giving a concrete context for discussing asynchronous lifecycles. Its publication does not establish a particular concurrency architecture in your app; the proposed engagement should start from your task ownership and integration boundaries.
