Improving iOS startup without moving the delay behind a spinner
A fast splash transition is not the same as a fast application. Users care when they can complete the first useful action. Startup optimization should measure both visible launch and readiness, using a representative device and realistic stored data rather than a single empty simulator run.
The decision to make
Define the symptom before changing code. The first frame may be late, the interface may appear but ignore input, or the app may block on a network request before showing saved content. These are different bottlenecks. Compare fresh installation, ordinary relaunch and return from suspension instead of combining them into one unqualified startup number.
Choose a baseline device and dataset that reflect the people who experience the delay. A small development database can conceal synchronous migrations or oversized image decoding. Field metrics can identify affected device and version groups, while local profiling explains where time is spent. Preserve the conditions for a repeatable comparison rather than quoting the fastest observed launch.
A useful scope of work
The work should include launch traces, critical-path analysis and a small set of targeted changes. Review initialization, dependency loading, storage opening and work scheduled on the interface thread. Defer nonessential work deliberately, but define when it runs and how it handles cancellation. A delayed error or unresponsive second screen is not a successful optimization.
Agree a user-oriented readiness marker such as opening the saved list or starting a recording. Record warm and colder launch conditions separately. Recheck permissions, purchases and pending migrations after changing startup order; they often depend on initialization that was previously accidental. Keep the output as evidence of behavior, not a universal performance claim for every supported device.
Acceptance checks to agree before delivery
Launch improvements need a repeatable comparison. Record the initial data, device and lifecycle condition for each run, and retain the same useful-action marker after optimization. These checks prevent a shorter splash screen from hiding delayed initialization, broken upgrade work or an interface that appears ready before it can respond.
- Repeat baseline and changed builds under the same device, dataset and documented launch conditions.
- Measure time to the first useful action as well as time to the first drawn screen.
- Launch with unavailable network access and confirm that saved content or a clear recoverable state appears.
- Upgrade an existing installation and verify that deferred initialization does not lose migrations or pending work.
Constraints and what to send us
Send the slowest affected device, application version, a representative sanitized dataset and any available launch metrics. Simulator results are helpful during diagnosis but cannot stand in for physical-device measurements. Set a target after the baseline is known. A fixed speedup percentage promised before profiling would be speculation rather than a responsible engineering scope.
Our own product reference and a starting engagement
Application launch profiling and optimization. GPT Realtime Assistant publishes interactive session workflows where readiness matters. It provides a concrete product reference, while your engagement should measure your own first action and storage conditions. The deliverable is a reproducible before-and-after comparison with remaining bottlenecks documented.
