iOS memory investigations: distinguish leaks from expensive working data
An application can use too much memory without leaking, and it can leak objects while appearing small in a short test. Start with the customer workflow and its memory trend. The investigation should explain what remains allocated, why it remains and whether that lifetime is appropriate.
The decision to make
Choose a repeatable sequence: open a document, view media, close it and repeat. Record peak memory and the level after the app returns to its resting state. A rising baseline suggests a different problem from a large but temporary peak. Both can matter on constrained hardware, especially when the operating system also needs memory for other processes.
Inspect retained object graphs alongside allocation and leak tools. A strongly held camera session, subscription observer or image cache may be intentional in one lifecycle and a defect in another. Do not replace every strong reference with a weak reference without understanding ownership. That can make an operation disappear prematurely while leaving the original lifecycle error unresolved.
A useful scope of work
A useful scope includes a representative dataset, memory traces and ownership analysis around the largest or longest-lived resources. Check decoded image dimensions rather than compressed download size alone. For media processing, specify whether frames are streamed, buffered or retained for editing. The correct repair may be a bounded cache, cancellation, downsampling or an earlier resource release.
After a change, repeat the same workflow and test low-memory behavior where practical. Confirm that reducing memory did not introduce corrupted output or reload loops. Document the supported device and workload, because an export with a short clip cannot establish the limits of an hours-long recording. Include a regression measurement for the path that motivated the work.
Acceptance checks to agree before delivery
A memory repair should explain both the peak and what remains after the workflow closes. Compare identical assets and repeated cycles rather than isolated screenshots of a gauge. These checks examine resource ownership, cancellation and output quality so a lower reading does not merely reflect abandoned work or smaller test inputs.
- Record repeatable peak and resting memory figures for the same workload before and after the change.
- Open and close the affected feature repeatedly and inspect whether its session objects remain retained.
- Exercise a larger representative asset without silently lowering output quality or abandoning saved user work.
- Confirm that cancellation and error paths release the same resources as successful completion does.
Constraints and what to send us
Send device details, workload size, any memory-related termination reports and steps that cause growth. A green leak-tool result does not prove that the application’s memory footprint is acceptable. Hardware testing and a realistic asset mix matter. The report should separate verified ownership defects, intentional cache behavior and workload limits that need product decisions.
Our own product reference and a starting engagement
Memory profiling and resource-lifecycle repair. Reel Screen Recorder is a public product handling screen and camera media, making resource ownership a relevant portfolio discussion. That does not imply a tested memory ceiling for your workload. A first engagement can profile one repeatable capture, preview or export sequence and document its limits.

Reel Screen Recorder is our own product or engineering project. It provides context for the work we discuss here; it is not a claim of identical results for every client deployment.
