Commissioning an iOS accessibility audit with a usable repair plan
Accessibility work is most useful when it starts with a task someone needs to finish. A screen can pass a contrast check while its confirmation action remains unreachable. Combine automated inspection with actual interaction, and prioritize barriers that prevent people from completing the product’s main workflows.
The decision to make
Name the journeys and access needs included in the review. Larger text, reduced motion, keyboard interaction and VoiceOver reveal different problems. A broad claim that an application is accessible is difficult to defend without a defined evaluation scope. Record devices, operating-system versions and the build being inspected so findings remain actionable.
Automated tools can flag missing descriptions, small targets or clipped text, but they cannot establish whether a spoken label communicates the right meaning. Inspect the interface with realistic content. A short English placeholder may fit while a long event title or localized purchase explanation hides the only available action.
A useful scope of work
The engagement should produce a task-based findings register with severity, reproduction steps, screenshots or descriptions and suggested repairs. Prioritize inaccessible primary actions, lost focus and information conveyed only by color before cosmetic consistency. Include the design and engineering causes where relevant so the same component does not reintroduce the problem on another screen.
A repair phase should test the updated component in its actual journey, not only in isolation. Review error presentation, permission explanations and destructive confirmations. For custom controls, define the semantic value, role and actions exposed to assistive technology. Keep any public accessibility claims aligned with the completed evaluation rather than the number of automated warnings removed.
Acceptance checks to agree before delivery
An accessibility repair should be accepted in the task where the barrier occurred. Automated findings are useful, but the person still needs to understand state and reach every essential action. The following checks combine content, interaction and declared scope without turning a limited evaluation into an unsupported claim of universal accessibility.
- Complete the agreed customer journeys at the largest relevant text sizes without losing essential controls.
- Identify status and errors without depending solely on color, animation, position or a visual icon.
- Operate custom controls using the assistive technologies named in the audit scope and inspect their values.
- Recheck fixed barriers on the affected devices and retain a concise record of remaining limitations.
Constraints and what to send us
Send the target build, representative accounts or data, supported languages and the journeys that matter commercially. An audit is not a legal certification or a guarantee that every user need has been covered. Budget for usability feedback where possible. Testing with people who use assistive technology can uncover issues that a tool-driven review misses.
