A VoiceOver audit for navigation, editing and live updates
VoiceOver support is a behavior, not a list of labels added at the end. A person needs to understand where they are, reach the next action and recover when content changes. An audit should follow complete tasks, including forms, sheets and asynchronous results.
The decision to make
Start with a journey that includes meaningful state changes: select an item, edit it, save and find the result. Listen for redundant announcements and controls whose labels describe appearance instead of purpose. A button called “blue arrow” does not explain whether it sends, continues or exports. Labels need the context of the surrounding task.
Reading order is only part of navigation. Verify that focus enters a newly presented sheet, remains sensible when a list refreshes and returns to a useful position after dismissal. Live content requires restraint; announcing every changing word can make an application impossible to operate. Decide which updates are essential and which can be reviewed on demand.
A useful scope of work
The scope should include manual VoiceOver traversal, custom control inspection and a findings log grouped by user impact. For rows containing several actions, evaluate whether grouping and custom actions make the task clearer. Preserve access to important information while avoiding repetitive reading. Test both forward and backward navigation to expose skipped or trapped elements.
Repairs should be accepted through recorded steps and manual retesting on a physical device. Error messages, destructive confirmations and loading completion need particular attention because they often appear outside the initial view hierarchy. Where a custom visual interaction cannot be made understandable, propose an equivalent explicit action rather than requiring the same gesture from every person.
Acceptance checks to agree before delivery
VoiceOver acceptance depends on completing a sequence, not just hearing each control once. Keep speech enabled while opening sheets, receiving new content and recovering from errors. These checks focus on meaning and focus continuity so improved labels do not conceal a navigation trap or repeated announcements that prevent the task.
- Complete the chosen journey using VoiceOver without switching it off to reach a hidden control.
- Traverse important content in both directions without focus loops, unexplained skips or repeated unrelated labels.
- Present and dismiss sheets and errors while preserving a useful focus position and understandable context.
- Refresh a list during reading and confirm that nonessential updates do not continually reset navigation.
Constraints and what to send us
Send a test build and the core tasks, including any dynamic content or custom gestures. A simulator inspection can help identify hierarchy problems but does not replace device interaction and speech feedback. The result should specify what was tested and what remains. VoiceOver improvements alone do not establish support for every other accessibility feature or language.
Our own product reference and a starting engagement
VoiceOver journey audit and semantic interface repair. GPT Realtime Assistant is an owned application with live text and session controls, providing relevant context for dynamic content discussions. Its public listing is portfolio evidence rather than a claim of universal screen-reader compatibility. Begin with one complete journey and documented focus behavior.
Relevant Arte Soft work
GPT Realtime Assistant is our own product or engineering project. It provides context for the work we discuss here; it is not a claim of identical results for every client deployment.
