Engineering guides / App maintenance and rescue

Taking over a stalled iOS app without making the situation worse

A stalled application often needs stabilization before new features. The first objective is to establish what exists, what can be built and what must not be lost. Treat an app rescue as a sequence of decisions backed by evidence, not a promise to finish an unknown codebase immediately.

The decision to make

Begin with access and ownership. Confirm who controls the repository, Apple Developer team, backend, domains and purchase configuration. Missing access can be a larger blocker than missing code. Preserve the current production state and existing signing assets through an agreed inventory; a cleanup that destroys the only reproducible release is not progress.

Classify the failure. The app may not build, may build but crash, may work only with one developer’s configuration or may fail during review. Each needs a different first intervention. Collect a known-good build or archive when available, user-visible incident examples and the last release’s dependency versions before changing broad areas.

A useful scope of work

A recovery assessment should deliver a build status, access map, incident priorities and a proposed first repair. Use a separate development configuration for investigation where possible. Preserve user data and establish backup and rollback responsibilities before touching schemas or authentication. When evidence is incomplete, label uncertainty rather than interpreting every unfamiliar component as defective.

The first repair should restore one critical journey and create a repeatable check around it. Avoid mixing a redesign, framework migration and backend rewrite into emergency work. Once the product is stable enough to observe, agree the next tranche of maintenance or feature delivery using what the investigation actually found.

Acceptance checks to agree before delivery

The first rescue milestone should reduce uncertainty and restore a critical capability safely. Require evidence of the previous failure and the resulting recovery, along with a preserved update path. The following checks prevent urgent work from becoming an uncontrolled rewrite or a cleanup that removes the only working production configuration.

  • Another authorized developer can create the same Debug or release candidate build from documented inputs.
  • The first repair reproduces the original failure before the change and passes a relevant regression check afterwards.
  • Existing installations retain their intended data, identifiers and purchase relationship during the agreed update path.
  • Client ownership, remaining access gaps and a rollback procedure are recorded before any production release.

Constraints and what to send us

Send the most recent repository, build errors, App Store status and details of the last working version. Do not clear production storage or rotate every credential simply to make a local setup convenient. A rescue estimate should be staged when the project cannot yet be built. Approval timing and undocumented third-party services may remain outside direct engineering control.

Our own product reference and a starting engagement

Application recovery assessment and bounded stabilization. Arte Soft maintains published products including Cloud Calendars. That ownership experience is relevant to update continuity, but it is not a claim of a particular rescued client project. The first engagement should establish your current state and a safe path to one verified repair.

Relevant Arte Soft work

Cloud Calendars: Sync & Widget is our own product or engineering project. It provides context for the work we discuss here; it is not a claim of identical results for every client deployment.
