Using live translation while travelling
Keep the first question short, listen to the reply, and confirm the details that matter.
Prepare before you need it
Before travelling, test the selected mode and language pair on your own device. Online modes need internet and AI credits. For on-device translation supported by your device and selected languages, download compatible translation and speech models before leaving. All modes require an active subscription; on-device translation uses no AI credits. Choose the local language and your language, and ask the other person if they are comfortable using the app.
Ask one thing at a time
At a hotel or cafe, start with one short question. Pause while the translation plays, then let the other person answer. The text gives both of you a second way to check what was said.
- Confirm prices and times by showing or writing the numbers.
- Keep place names and addresses visible in their original form.
- Move to a quieter spot when announcements or traffic drown out the voice.
Know its limits
AI translations can be inaccurate or delayed. Check important travel instructions with staff or an official source. For emergencies, contact the local emergency service and seek qualified help.
